Never the right lens...
/Isn’t it strange how as a photographer you never seem to have the right lens or camera at the right time - why does it just seem to fall that way?
So many times I head out with nothing specific in mind to shoot, and then all of a sudden the light gods align their ideas and gift me with a few fleeting moments of magical light and conditions. It’s almost as though they seem to know what I want and then decide to dish it out when it’s least expected or anticipated. '
Looking up at the sky and it often seems that it’s not worth taking a “big camera” out, as sunset or soft light seems impossible. That always seems to be when you’re greeted with a perfect sunset and a scene that just doesn’t fit well on whatever screen you have available. It’s frustrating and seems cruel at time - but hey, it’s how it rolls, and you just need to make the best of whatever image making device you happen to have with you at the time.
Bellow are a couple on images captured 2 weeks apart, one a phone pic the other from a long lens on a mirrorless camera. Same location and scene but different takes conditions, both from evenings that I figured would not be lucky light days (like with the other times I’ve passed this lone palm tree).
Neither were what I had in mind from a focal length stance, but they worked out. I guess the moral of the story could be the age old “be prepared” proverb, but I think it’s more fitting to make the best of a situation and don’t let it pas just because you have the “wrong” gear with you..
