Mobile mastery & misconceptions
/It still both amazes and disappoints me how people judge you by how big your camera is, including fellow photographers.
I’ve always been fairly mobile, and have based all of that around keeping my kit as minimal and compact as possible - which often draws sneers from fellow photographer at bike races. Strange thing is, as they get to know my work and over time many quietly look deeper into those small camera systems that I prefer to work with, well - lets just say that on numerous occasions they head out and buy the self same or very similar systems themselves. Funny old thing that.
The same thing comes in double spade loads when it comes to mobile photography. Many turn their noses up at the mere notion; “it’s only a phone pic” is a chant I’ve heard way too often from those who should or could know better. The fact is that modern mobile phones are fantastic image making devices, and they come with inbuilt editing software and connectivity - meaning that you can pull a phone out, shoot, edit, caption and post and file a picture within minutes, which would have seemed like a ridiculous pipe dream just a decade ago.
Anyway, I am a huge fan of mobile photography, and despite running an old model iPhone 7 I shoot on it most days, and if done right the results are amazing, and more than good enough for online and even magazine use, so never let the gear restrictions hold you back.
Here’s a trip of pics shot recently on a phone, images that I would not have captured had i hot had a phone with me.
