Photography talks, tuition and tours

Following requests from photographic groups who’ve seen my material in magazines and on websites I’ve put together an initial program of photography presentation talks.

For the time being these will all be “virtual” presentations that will be screened live and direct your computer screens or devices via Zoom (alternative methods are possible).

On average a presentation will last around 90 minutes, with a short midway intermission and with a Q&A session to round things off.

There will be plenty of images shown, lots of practical information given, and a few tales to raise eyebrows and crack some smiles.

Hopefully I will add to the list from time to time so as to keep things interesting and varied. If any of these, or any other specific subject would be of interest to you please email me for more details and bookings.

A journey into action and adventure photography

CRN0081.jpg

Be it dangling off ridges above the sweaty jungles of Borneo, biking the breathless peaks of the Himalayas or chasing ultra runners and cyclists through the deserts of the Middle East, action and adventure photography is a major part of my life.

Here I delve into stories from numerous adventures, talk of lessons and experiences learned along the way – and, or course step into the practical side of action and adventure photography.

In the hot seat - life as a cycling photographer

DSCF3429.jpg

Clinging onto the back of a motorbike at 180kph with your eyes closed as it slithers through the snow of the Tibetan Plateau with cameras in both hands as you chase down a bike race is something few ever get to experience, and it’s all part of my life as a cycling photographer.

However, there’s a whole lot more to cycling photography than shooting bike races. This is the story of staring out with an instamatic camera and progressing on to making a life from photographing and writing about cycling, and in every form and in most corners of the world.

Plus, I also look into the technical side and show you how approachable and fun it can be for anyone out there.

Mirrorless and minimalist travel photography

DSCF2461.jpg

For more than 30 years I’ve been travelling the world and capturing images for a living. At one time that meant lugging huge great SLR’s and bags full of film around, but times have changed.

For 10 years now I’ve been working mostly with mirrorless cameras and smaller lenses, which has revolutionised life on the go.

This is the story of that evolution, and of how I use these pint-sized cameras to capture images all around the world – and without breaking my back or the bank.

Northern Laos exposed

During the past 15 years I’ve been privileged to spend a great deal of time travelling through the remote and fascinating far north of Laos, one of Southeast Asia’s last true wild frontiers.

This is a land stepped back in time and steeped in secretive history. Small and remote mountain settlements, jungles, and hill tribe communities make it an adventurous photographers dream.

Here are my experiences of years spent capturing this fast evolving and captivating land.

Seasons of Cappadocia

DSCF6288.1jpg.jpg

Cappadocia in central Turkey is one of the most surreal and magical places on earth. From it’s fairy chimneys and ancient cave dwellings to underground cities and secret valleys, this really is a very special place, and even more so for a photographer.

For me it was love at first sight with Cappadocia, and over the last 8 years I’ve spent many months here. From the harsh but stunning winter snows through the heat of summer and on to the autumnal blooms, this place never fails to impress.

This is an insight into my travels and photography here, along with plenty of tips to hopefully encourage you to make the journey here one day soon.

Photography tours and workshops have been in the works for some time now, although given the on-going global situation these will not be scheduled until we’re all safe and able to travel and meet in groups.

Full details will be posted here when the situation is more stable.
